Archbishop Mercieca has passed away this morning
Mgr Ġużeppi Mercieca, Archbishop emeritus of Malta, has passed away this morning, at the age of 87.
Born on 11 November 1928 in Victoria, Gozo and baptised at St George’s parish church, Mercieca became a priest of our parish on 8 March 1952, when he was ordained at St James’ church in Victoria. In April he celebrated his First Solemn Mass at St George’s.
He served as Rector of the Gozo Major Seminary between 1958 and 1969. On 20 July 1974 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Malta and nominated Titular Bishop of Gemellæ in Numidia. His Episcopal Consecration took place on 29 September 1974. On 29 November 1976 he was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Malta, succeeding Mgr Sir Michael Gonzi. He retired from Archbishop of Malta in 2006.
We pray for the repose of his soul and give our condolences to his family, amongst them Canon John, member of our Collegiate Chapter, and to the Church in Malta who has lost a great pastor.
